{"id":2241,"date":"2011-01-04T19:41:34","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T19:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thesocialcmo.com\/blog\/?p=2241"},"modified":"2011-01-04T19:41:34","modified_gmt":"2011-01-04T19:41:34","slug":"the-power-of-yes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thesocialcmo.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/the-power-of-yes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of YES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0love anticipating the smell of the Thanksgiving turkey roasting all day at home, and the lingering scent it leaves behind for a few days until my 14\u2032 douglas fir arrives.\u00a0 (Even though I\u2019m allergic to the tree, the beauty of its\u2019 fullness and soft evergreen needles keeps me coming back.\u00a0 My husband and grandson say no more 200 lb. trees are coming in the house; we\u2019ll see\u2026.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year, my side of the family gathered at Bricker\u2019s Pizza in Hershey for Thanksgiving; my nephew, Robbie, has worked there part-time since his college days.\u00a0 Since his girlfriend\u2019s family and our whole family convened to celebrate the holiday, we needed someplace to meet that could accommodate all of us.\u00a0 Even though he\u2019s now finished graduate school and works as a civil engineer, he still loves filling in at the pizza shop when they need help.\u00a0 His gal, Lauren, is a senior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; they\u2019ve been dating since January, thanks to his aunt Jenny (who set them up on a blind date then).\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We have a family tradition, initiated by my sister Mary, of going around the table between the meal and dessert and sharing what we\u2019re thankful for over the past year.\u00a0 The Montagues participated with us this year; order was determined by Mary\u2019s pull of their n<a href=\"http:\/\/lightkeeper.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/RobbieLaurenEngaged.bmp\"><\/a>ame from a canister.\u00a0 Somehow, Robbie managed to be last in sharing his thoughts.\u00a0 He thanked both families for agreeing to share Thanksgiving in Hershey, talked about how his life has changed since January, and then got down on one knee, pulling the ring box from his pocket, and asked Lauren to marry him.\u00a0 While Lauren briefly stared at my mother\u2019s diamond (which Robbie added some sapphires to, because she loves them), Robbie sweated each second out.\u00a0 She finally whispered yes, and he gently placed the ring on her finger before hugging her sweetly\u2026as the families clapped.\u00a0 They shared tears of happiness and held each other, taking joy in the word, \u201cyes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lightkeeper.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/RobbieLaurenEngaged.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"RobbieLaurenEngaged\" src=\"http:\/\/lightkeeper.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/RobbieLaurenEngaged.bmp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That precious moment made me think of how much I love to empower people to say, \u201cyes!\u201d\u2026and how I want to do more of that in the coming year.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It\u2019s been a tough year for my husband health-wise.\u00a0 But thanks to good doctors, while we\u2019re faced with cancer a fifth time, the doctor is saying \u201cYes, we can take care of that.\u201d\u00a0 He developed a hernia after having his other cancerous kidney removed in September, and the doctor said, \u201cYes, we can take care of that.\u201d\u00a0 When contemplating how to make our entrepreneurial program at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) be more responsive to our students and ahead of our competitors, we said, \u201cYes, we can do that!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m very excited about the additions to the major that should be instituted in the fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When a client asked me to modify my role from just the administrator of a conference to providing training for session on social media, I hedged.\u00a0 Why did I hesitate?\u00a0 I know I can do that.\u00a0 Changing a pattern of 10 years proved mentally challenging for me, even though I knew my skill and knowledge level was more than needed for this new task.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had other leaders provide this training in the past, but they talked in broad strokes, while our audience needs a basic foundation instead.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ve been telling myself, \u201cYes, I KNOW I can do that!\u201d\u00a0 My client (who is also a dear friend) has had to talk me into it.\u00a0 So, \u201cYes, Diane: I CAN do that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0While I\u2019m still working through what my goals will be to enable myself, and others to say, \u201cYes!\u201d in 2011, I challenge YOU to make concrete plans to empower yourself, and others, in the days ahead with a resounding \u201cYES!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Snavely<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00a0love anticipating the smell of the Thanksgiving turkey roasting all day at home, and the lingering scent it leaves behind for a few days until my 14\u2032 douglas fir arrives.\u00a0 (Even though I\u2019m allergic to the tree, the beauty of its\u2019 fullness and soft evergreen needles keeps me coming back.\u00a0 My husband and grandson say &#8230;
