We found out in the late \u201990s, via various experiments, that electrons act as either particles or waves, depending on whether they were observed. What does that have to do with marketing, you say?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1530127155705_5194\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p>Let\u2019s translate what we know about quantum mechanics to the world of the consumer and our observation and marketing efforts. I\u2019ll wager that it\u2019s a similar phenomenon. When we\u2019re observing our customers and gathering data on them, we\u2019re affecting their relationship with us as brands. Especially if we\u2019re not careful with how we use the information we gather.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Let\u2019s have a show of hands<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How many of you feel that you\u2019re being followed around on the internet? You look at a website or click on an ad, and suddenly that ad is following you around everywhere you go online. It\u2019s called retargeting, and it\u2019s become a very popular form of mass marketing. Does seeing this ad around every corner or popping in the middle of a YouTube video you\u2019re trying to watch give you a sudden urge to buy that product?<\/p>\n<p>Now check your junk mail box, and unfortunately your regular inbox too, because so many are finding their way through the filters. Do you see emails from the same companies who follow you around online? Do those emails ever come out of your SPAM mindset and get acted upon? No? Do they come again, and again, and again WAY too often\u2026? Even if you try to unsubscribe?<\/p>\n<p>Now raise your hand if you participate in retargeting your customers, and bombarding them with email offers\u2026 I thought so.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>We\u2019re not learning the lessons of the past<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just like mass marketing in the days of old, retargeting is being used to inundate our customers with unwanted, interruptive solicitations.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tedrubin\/posts\/10155880888288401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We\u2019re bombarding them with daily emails (sometimes twice and three times a day).<\/a>\u00a0We\u2019re stalking them around the internet from web surfing to social platforms, and even pinging them on their cell phones! You can\u2019t scroll a single article from an online magazine on your phone without having to navigate around in-line ads and pop-ups. It\u2019s F*#@-ing ANNOYING!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1530127155705_8896\" class=\"sqs-block image-block sqs-block-image sqs-text-ready\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1530900967171_103\" class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1530900967171_102\" class=\"image-block-outer-wrapper image-block-v2 design-layout-overlap image-position-right sqs-text-ready\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1530900967171_101\" class=\"intrinsic\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1530900967171_100\" class=\"image-inset content-fit\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5a92eb7a3c3a537d1b51946a\/t\/5b33e422352f53bc35bc0db9\/1530127474934\/ted3.jpg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"ted3.jpg\" width=\"795\" height=\"448\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"image-overlay\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re repeating history, because during the mass marketing years we didn\u2019t pay attention to the downside either.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1530127155705_10391\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p>But worse than just being annoying, it\u2019s damaging to the customer experience. All you have to do is put yourself in the shoes of your consumer, but many of us simply don\u2019t. Everyone is doing it right now, so we\u2019re all victims, yet we\u2019re still \u201cdoing unto others\u201d what we find off-putting in the extreme ourselves. We\u2019re repeating history, because during the mass marketing years we didn\u2019t pay any attention to the downside either.<\/p>\n<p>Brands are running headlong into brand equity destruction through incessant programmatic and digital spamming. The rise of retargeting and digital yield techniques is killing brands, and brand equity for the long-term. It makes me wonder how many brand managers bother signing up for their own email distribution lists, or shop their brands from an anonymous browser to experience what their customers are being subjected to.<\/p>\n<p>Despite becoming numb to the onslaught of messaging, I suspect that the overall perception of brands that are engaging in such digital behavior, is declining dramatically\u2026 And this is a central tenant of brand relevancy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The numbers and sentiment you\u2019re NOT tracking are important<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve got data coming out of our ears, so tracking the results of our marketing efforts in terms of dollars and cents is becoming easier and easier. However, all these efforts only measure the upside of banging consumers over the head (how many more clicks, shares, engagements, and ultimately sales, do we get).<\/p>\n<p>No regard is given to the downside numbers. What we\u2019re NOT tracking is the point at which our customers turn from just annoyed, to fed up with our bot stalking and algorithm tweaking. And even if we COULD come up with a KPI for the flip side, it will be difficult to analytically compare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1530127155705_11407\" class=\"sqs-block quote-block sqs-block-quote null\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1530900967171_430\" class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<figure>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe need to spend as much time finding ways to track the negative effect of our marketing efforts, as we do the positive ones.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1530127155705_11863\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p>So what\u2019s a marketer to do? I think we need to spend as much time finding ways to track the negative effect of our marketing efforts as we do the positive ones. Those quantum scientists we talked about earlier found out that by controlling the properties of the quantum observer, the scientists could control the extent of its influence on the electrons\u2019 behavior. I think the same can be said for brands \u2014 we now know that our marketing has both positive and negative effects on our consumers.<\/p>\n<p>We need to study all of it, because by controlling how we market to our customers and finding ways to add value rather than beating them over the head, we can have a less disruptive effect on their lives and a more positive experience with our brands.
